Solved my problem.
After a bit of toying around with the interface (which, I admit is fairly complicated for the average user - or even a tired audiophile as in my case) this application saved the day. In order to convert my FLAC files into Apple Lossless successfully, I simply chose Format "m4a" and Encoding "alac". I set everything else to "Same as Source" and everything worked including tags, audio playback, and importing the files into iTunes.
A splended application worth the $10, as it even tagged properly on my entire library - a task at which XLD failed miserably and left iTunes rather unorganized.
